The foundation stone for the cathedral was laid in 1866, and it took nearly twenty years to complete the building. It was designed by architect Alexander Ross and is one of only eight cathedrals in Scotland to be built in the Gothic style. The cathedral also has ties to renowned Scottish author and poet, Robert Louis Stevenson, who attended services here during his time living in Inverness.
